BM5k,
Let me help you a bit, as I have been through this a few times.
First, don’t edit the 0000_any_80_.conf is the sites directory. Instead create a new directory: /etc/apache2/extra/
In there, make a new conf file like: httpd-subverison.conf. You can just copy the contents of the 0000_any_80_.conf generated for you. Make your changes to the <location> section.

Then edit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and add to the end of it this:

Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-subversion.conf

Finaly, from Server Admin, remove the subversion site you setup, or uncheck it to disable it. Now, whenever you make changes to your sites in server admin you will not need to fix the site file again.

Leopard Server posted by BM5k @ Sun, 13 Apr 2008 22:16:56 -0000

Installing Warehouse on Leopard Server was relatively painless, the rails svn bindings come pre-installed, and pretty much everything worked “out of the box”. A couple things bit me with SVN config, and it took quite a while to track everything down.

Getting SVN to work in Leopard

This assumes that you want to have seperate repositories for each of multiple projects. You don’t have to create every project just yet. If you know you’re only going to have a single project or a single repository, then things are slightly simpler, but I won’t bother with that.

Create a folder to store your repositories, I used Terminal:

sudo mkdir -p /Library/Subversion/Repository

use svnadmin create your project directories

cd /Library/Subversion/Repository
sudo svnadmin create project1
sudo svnadmin create project2
sudo svnadmin create project3

Set the repository permissions (you must do this after creating new projects)

sudo chown -R www:admin /Library/Subversion
sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Subversion

Open up Server Admin, and select your server’s web config.

Under settings / modules, select

authz_svn_module
dav_module
dav_fs_module
dav_svn_module

In the settings for your site, enable Dav and add a realm.

I called mine svn_realm, and set it to use basic authentication at the location /svn/

I’ve got a group for webmasters, and have given them read/write access to this realm, and denied everyone else.

The hard part:
You have to modify the /etc/apache2/sites/your-site-here.conf by hand. On my server, this file is /etc/apache2/sites/0000_any_80_.conf

Look for the <location> line, and make sure these two lines are in that location block. I’ve got mine as the first 2 lines.

DAV svn
SVNParentPath /Library/Subversion/Repository

I prefer TextMate, but you can use anything. The problem is that every time you use Server Admin to make ANY changes to your web server, you’ll have to re-open this file, because for some reason Server Admin changes DAV svn to DAV off EVERY FRICKIN TIME!!!

Here’s my entire location directive

<Location "/svn/">
        DAV svn
        SVNParentPath /Library/Subversion/Repository
<Limit GET HEAD OPTIONS CONNECT POST PROPFIND PUT
DELETE PROPPATCH MKCOL COPY MOVE LOCK UNLOCK>
            Require group webmasters
        </Limit>
        AuthType Basic
        AuthName "svn_realm"
    </Location>

This lets you check in and out like

svn import project1
<a href="http://your.server.com/svn/project1">http://your.server.com/svn/project1</a>
-m "Initial Import"

and

svn checkout
<a href="http://your.server.com/svn/project1/trunk/">http://your.server.com/svn/project1/trunk/</a>
project1

Sorry about the formatting, it seems to be ignoring the code & pre tags, and inserting links :(

Warehouse

I’ve created a Rails directory in /Library/WebServer where I intend to house all of my rails apps. Warehouse is installed in warehouse/current (thanks to rake warehouse:setup). I’ve got it set up to use directories instead of sub domains. Right now, I’ve just been running it using ruby script/server -e production to test everything, but so far/so good.

I’m using the default post-commit hook for SVN, so I’ve got

#!/bin/sh
cd /Library/WebServer/Rails/warehouse/current
/usr/bin/rake warehouse:post_commit RAILS_ENV=production REPO_PATH=$1 REVISION=$2

In there. I’ve copied this folder into all of my /Library/Subversion/Repositories/project/hooks directories.

It was harder for me to get SVN figured out than it was to get Warehouse up and running. Lots of time on google and countless other people are responsible for all the info above. Hope this saves someone else some time.

Any ideas?

I will try to make the FogBugz integration clearer. Out of the box FogBugz can link to a web frontend for your source code which is what the second link above talks about. Setting that up is pretty easy, by creating the links in your site settings for source code control integration, then putting a couple hooks into your repository’s hooks directory.

In my case though, I have multiple repositories and for FogBugz to link back to the checkin, it needs a proxy page to parse the repository name out of the file parameter, then it forwards you on to the right file by building the link for you. That is what the first link talks about, it extends what we did to get the source control integration setup for when you have multiple repositories. You basically download the proxy page in the format you want, make some adjustments to the source and then put it on a server where you can reach it from within FogBugz. I want to incorporate this proxy page as a Warehouse plugin, to make it easier to setup and make it where the two products are more seamless. Basically it will get rid of the need for that proxy page and replace it with a Warehouse plugin instead.

For the reporting, I will look at those two projects to get feature ideas. Let me know if I should work on this, because I can kind of see this as a core feature also.

I don’t really get the idea behind the fogbugz one.

As for the reporting stuff, we’ve talked about adding something as simple as github’s graphs for months. Though it’d probably make for a better plugin than a core feature. Something more comprehensive like Ohloh would be pretty neat too.

Plugin Development Resources posted by dragan @ Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:18:31 -0000

I have two plugins that I would like to develop. The first, which I have an immediate need for is better FogBugz integration with viewing checkins from within FogBugz for multiple repositories. FogCreek wrote a php file to help deal with this scenario, but I thought it would be better to take that a step further and make a warehouse plugin out of it, so other users could use it also. In general, I just want to make the integration more seamless and easier to setup the linking in FogBugz back to Warehouse. You can read more info here:

http://www.fogcreek.com/FogBugz/KB/howto/Multip…

http://www.fogcreek.com/FogBugz/docs/60/topics/...

The second idea I have is a plugin for reporting analytics on checkins and so on. I am still working out features in my head, but that is the general concept.

Let me know what you think?

I guess I will create something that is a little more tightly integrated with Warehouse, unless the current plugin system will accomplish what I want to do, until the beta arrives. I kind of need the functionality for myself now. When the beta arrives, I will write it correctly using the new plugin system, before letting other users use it. If you have some time, I would like to email you what I want to accomplish, then you can point me in the right direction, to just get something up and running.

I do have a license, so no worries there. Send me a beta when you have something ready.

Okay, well I’ll definitely seed you a beta copy when I have something ready (assuming you have a Warehouse license). I’ll also gladly refund the license cost too if you’re able contribute to the warehouse plugin community. Course, $30 isn’t much, we may have to figure out a better way to say ‘thanks’.

Geoff: we’ve thought about web based installations. Though the idea is attractive, I don’t want to be responsible for an evil plugin hosing someone’s install through some discovered backdoor. This is obviously a worst-case scenario. Also, online plugin installation doesn’t really work correctly with multiple mongrel processes right now.

Course it would be sweet if in Warehouse’s case because SVN would already be on the server if it could svn export/checkout the plugins through the web interface :-P

Actually that might be a bad idea. Something to be said for having to connect up to the host and do things yourself sometimes.

I saw the Rails Engines framework mentioned in previous posts. Based on what I have read on the Rails Engines site, it looks like a very viable framework to use for the plugin system in Warehouse. Some main features that I saw:

1. Totally run a plugin side by side with an app, without having to touch the app’s core code
2. Provides an easy install interface, just point to a svn url
3. Configuration setup for end users, without them having to manually find files and edit them. This is awesome for what I am working on.

I think those 3 features are worth it alone. Also, I think it would be a nice feature where warehouse could host the plugins. I don’t mind hosting it myself, but it gives the user a central location to get plugins for warehouse. It will be good to also have some page on the site that has a list and where they can find the plugin.

The plugin system was never really fully approved for use. I’ve run into various issues with it, and I’d like to move to soemthing Rails Engines based (so I can leverage the great work that community has already done). Any thoughts on that?

I’m hoping it won’t be a big stretch to move to a more engines-based system.

As for releasing your plugin: you can do what you like. It can be open source or even paid, as long as it doesn’t come with Warehouse or anything like that.

OK, I have searched and searched on this forum and the Warehouse site and I cannot seem to find any resources on creating a plugin for Warehouse. I saw the Photo Gallery plugin that is in the Warehouse install, which I believe is probably a demo, but when I try to create my own plugin and navigate to the plugins area under Admin, I get an error. The error is a template error in plugins/_plugin.html.erb. I am doing something wrong, more than likely. I am posting this in hopes to get some clarity on the steps to create a plugin and also future reference for somebody else who wants to create a warehouse plugin. The plugin I am writing shouldn’t take long with a good reference.

I will also be sharing my plugin, by posting a topic in this thread about it. Before I do that, is there any kind of process the plugin has to go through by the Warehouse team? Also, Warehouse Dev Team, if you would like to know more about my plugin, just send me an email. I don’t want to give it away until it is done, in case I don’t finish it.

Just FYI: but it’s likely the plugins system will move to using Rails Engines. It has a better framework for extending rails apps.

Any idea when this will be released, if it’s still being worked on? If it’s not, then would you be willing to let someone else take up the baton with your existing source?

I’m really looking for something like this for my open source projects- commercial ones get to use Lighthouse, but being able to set up tickets for the myriad small open source projects would be nice. If you’re not planning to release this I may give writing my own a shot.
